More on ordinal numbers
- In compound ordinal numbers, only the last figure is expressed as an ordinal number.
- 341st = three hundred and forty-first
- 7,511th = seven thousand, five hundred and eleventh
- When expressed as figures (in Italian "cifre"), the last two letters of the ordinal number are added to the Arabic number. Examples: first = 1st, second = 2nd, third = 3rd, fourth = 4th, thirty-sixth = 66th, hundred and first = 101st
- In spoken English, the definite article is used before the ordinal number, though it is not usually written. Examples: May 2nd --> May the second
- In names of kings, queens, popes, ordinal numbers are written as Roman numbers, but read as ordinal.
- Examples:
- Elizabeth I - Elizabeth the First
- Henry VIII - Henry the Eighth
- Pope John XXIII - Pope John the Twenty-Third
- Elizabeth I - Elizabeth the First
