More on ordinal numbers

  • In compound ordinal numbers, only the last figure is expressed as an ordinal number.
    • 341st = three hundred and forty-first
    • 7,511th = seven thousand, five hundred and eleventh

  • When expressed as figures (in Italian "cifre"), the last two letters of the ordinal number are added to the Arabic number. Examples: first = 1st, second = 2nd, third = 3rd, fourth = 4th, thirty-sixth = 66th, hundred and first = 101st

  • In spoken English, the definite article is used before the ordinal number, though it is not usually written. Examples: May 2nd --> May the second

  • In names of kings, queens, popes, ordinal numbers are written as Roman numbers, but read as ordinal.
      Examples:
    • Elizabeth I - Elizabeth the First
    • Henry VIII - Henry the Eighth
    • Pope John XXIII - Pope John the Twenty-Third
